Discord’s New Age Verification System: What It Means for Users

Discord is about to introduce a major change to its age verification system that will affect every user on the platform. Starting in March 2026, Discord will treat every user as a teenager by default, locking access to age-restricted servers and adult content unless users prove they are over 18. This shift is a dramatic departure from how most platforms handle age checks, and it signals a more stringent approach to content moderation and privacy.

The idea behind this change is simple: Discord no longer wants to take users at their word when they sign up. Instead, the platform will require users to verify their age before being granted access to certain features, such as adult-themed channels, stage channels, or content flagged as graphic or sensitive. This move aims to improve the safety of teenagers on the platform but could also cause disruption for users accustomed to freely accessing adult content.

How the Verification Process Works

To access age-restricted servers and content, Discord users must complete one of two verification methods at launch. The first option involves using AI-powered facial age estimation. Users are required to record a video selfie, which stays on their device, and the AI analyzes it to determine whether they are likely a teenager or an adult. If the AI makes an error, users can appeal or opt for a second verification method—submitting a government-issued ID to Discord’s third-party vendors.

For privacy-conscious users, the idea of submitting a government ID can be unsettling. Although Discord assures that the ID images are deleted promptly after verification, concerns remain following a previous data breach in which users’ government IDs were exposed. Discord swiftly ended its partnership with the breached vendor, but the damage to user trust was significant.

Additionally, Discord is deploying a third, background option for users who are already on the platform. The system uses an age inference model that analyzes metadata, such as activity patterns and games played, to determine whether users are likely adults. If the model is confident, users can bypass the verification process altogether.

The Impact of These Changes

While the new verification system is designed to protect young users from potentially harmful content, it could also create challenges for Discord. The company admits it expects a “hit” to its user base, particularly as some users may be deterred by the verification process or find ways to bypass it. Discord has acknowledged the likelihood of users trying to trick the system, as seen in its previous tests in the UK and Australia, where users found ways to bypass facial verification using photo modes in games. Discord has already patched that workaround, but it’s clear that this will be an ongoing challenge.

The goal, according to Savannah Badalich, Discord’s global head of product policy, is to target truly adult content, such as explicit material, that should not be accessible to teenagers. While most Discord users aren’t likely to be interacting with adult spaces, the platform’s decision to require age verification for all users marks a more cautious approach to its role in content moderation.

A Safety-Focused Push

To complement these changes, Discord is also launching a Teen Council, comprising 10 to 12 users aged 13 to 17. This initiative aims to better understand the needs of teenagers on the platform and ensure the new age verification system aligns with their experiences. Whether this council will lead to meaningful changes in Discord’s approach to teen safety is yet to be seen, but the initiative indicates a shift towards more thoughtful and inclusive decision-making.

What It Means for You

If you’re a current Discord user or planning to join, be prepared to verify your age if you wish to access age-restricted servers or adult content. The new system will apply to both new users and long-time veterans alike. As privacy concerns and user safety continue to be hot topics in the digital space, Discord’s push to safeguard its younger audience is likely to become a defining feature of the platform in the years to come.

Discord’s new age verification system, though disruptive, demonstrates the growing importance of digital safety. While it may limit access for some, it reflects a broader effort to ensure the platform remains a safe space for all users, especially teenagers. As the global rollout begins in March, users will need to navigate this new requirement in order to continue enjoying Discord’s full range of features.
