Located just 25 kilometers from Nairobi’s bustling city center, Ngong Hills offers a breathtaking escape into nature. Managed by the Kenya Forest Service and the Ngong Road Forest Association under the Forest Act of 2005, this 1,224-hectare forest reserve is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Divided by Ngong Road into Miotoni (north) and Racecourse/Kibera (south), and further segmented by the Southern Bypass, Ngong Hills is renowned for its stunning hiking trails, panoramic views of Nairobi and the Great Rift Valley, and its historical significance, famously featured in Karen Blixen’s Out of Africa. Why Visit Ngong Hills?

Rising to a peak of 2,460 meters, Ngong Hills is a majestic mountain range offering unparalleled vistas and a rich cultural history. Visitors can explore the site where Denys Finch Hatton, Karen Blixen’s lover, was buried, adding a layer of historical intrigue. With a variety of activities like hiking, zip-lining, and camping, Ngong Hills is perfect for adventurers, families, and those seeking a peaceful retreat in nature.

Getting to Ngong Hills

Ngong Hills is easily accessible from Nairobi via several transportation options:

  • Public Transport: Take matatu No. 111 from Railways (opposite Memorial) to Ngong town, about 2 kilometers from the Forest Reserve Gate. From there, walk or hire a boda boda (motorbike) for a 10-minute ride. Negotiate fares with riders and exchange contact details for return trips.
  • Private Vehicle: Drive along Ngong Road past Dagoretti Corner, Karen, and Ngong Town until you reach Ngong Police Station. Google Maps can guide you to the Forest Reserve Gate, where designated parking is available.
  • Ride-Hailing Services: Use apps like Uber, Bolt, Little Cab, Yego, or InDriver to book a cab, boda boda, or van directly to the gate or to Ngong town, followed by a short boda boda ride.

Entry Fees

The Kenya Forest Service collects entry fees at the gate, accepting payments via M-PESA or debit cards (cash is not accepted). Below are the entry fees in Kenyan Shillings (KSh):
