Tsavo West National Park Entry Fees and Visitor Information

Tsavo West National Park, situated in Taita Taveta and Makueni counties, spans approximately 9,065 square kilometres, making it Kenya’s second-largest national park. Managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), the park is part of the larger Tsavo ecosystem and is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and abundant wildlife.

Why Visit Tsavo West National Park?

Tsavo West is particularly well known for its large herds of red-dusted elephants, which roam freely across its vast plains. The park also shelters all members of the Big Five—elephants, lions, leopards, buffalos, and rhinos—making it a top safari destination in Kenya.

Beyond wildlife, Tsavo West offers some of the most diverse natural scenery in the country. Its savannah landscape features open grasslands, acacia woodlands, riverine vegetation, and volcanic terrain. Highlights include:

  • Mzima Springs – a crystal-clear spring fed by underground water from Chyulu Hills
  • Lake Jipe – shared with Tanzania, popular for boat rides and birding
  • Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary – home to the critically endangered black rhino
  • Tsavo and Athi Rivers, lava flows, and volcanic cones add to its unique geological appeal

Tsavo West also offers excellent birdwatching opportunities, with over 500 bird species recorded, including kingfishers, hornbills, and migratory species.
