Replacing the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), this new initiative under the Social Health Authority (SHA) adopts a pooled-resource approach to ensure comprehensive health coverage.

This guide provides clear, step-by-step instructions for registering with SHIF, whether as an individual principal member or including your dependents.

Who Qualifies for SHIF Membership?

To enroll in SHIF, applicants must meet these requirements:

  • Be a Kenyan citizen or legal resident
  • Possess a valid national ID or passport
  • Be aged 18 years or older

The program accommodates:

  • Self-employed professionals
  • Students
  • Retirees

Understanding Membership Categories

  1. Principal Member
    The primary account holder responsible for premium payments (typically the household’s main income earner).
  2. Dependents
    Family members covered under the principal member’s plan, including:
    • Spouses
    • Children (biological or legally adopted)
    • Other recognized dependents

Required Documentation

For principal members:

  • National ID or passport
  • Recent passport-sized color photograph
  • Proof of income (payslip, bank statement, or KRA PIN certificate)

For dependents:

  • Birth certificates (for children)
  • Marriage certificate (for spouses)
  • Valid identification for each dependent

Three Registration Methods

1. USSD Registration (*147#)

  • Dial *147# from your mobile device
  • Select your identification type
  • Enter your ID number when prompted
  • Complete all required information fields
  • Receive confirmation via SMS upon successful registration

2. Online Portal Registration

  • Visit the official SHA website: www.sha.go.ke
  • Click “Register” in the navigation menu
  • Complete the digital registration form
  • Verify your account using the OTP sent to your mobile number
  • Note: Final activation requires in-person biometric verification at an SHA center

3. In-Person Registration

  • Locate your nearest SHA office or Huduma Centre
  • Present all required original documents
  • Complete the physical registration form with agent assistance
  • Undergo biometric data capture
  • Receive immediate confirmation of successful registration

Important Additional Information

  • Verification Requirement: Online registrants must complete biometric verification within 30 days at an SHA center
  • Premium Payments: Contribution amounts vary based on income levels
  • Coverage Activation: Benefits become accessible after first premium payment
