Unison Sacco, originally founded in 1977 as Laikipia Teachers Sacco, rebranded in 2014 to reflect its broader mission of empowering members to build wealth. From a modest start with fewer than 100 members, it has grown to serve over 30,000 members, boasting an asset base of KES 6.79 billion. Regulated by the Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA) under the Sacco Societies Act 2008, Unison Sacco is a trusted deposit-taking institution headquartered at Unison Sacco Plaza in Nanyuki Town.
Who Can Join?
Unison Sacco welcomes a diverse membership base, including:
- Employees of the Teachers Service Commission
- Civil servants
- Staff of private schools and institutions
- Corporate organizations
- Micro-credit groups
- Individual business owners able to make regular contributions
Membership Requirements
To become a member, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Eligibility: Must fall within the Sacco’s field of membership as outlined in its by-laws.
- Age: Be at least 18 years old.
- Exclusivity: Not be a member of another salary-based Sacco in Kenya.
- Character: Demonstrate good character and not engage in activities, such as money lending, that conflict with the Sacco’s objectives.
- Referral: Be introduced by an existing member.
- Income: Have a regular source of income from employment, business, or trade.
- Fees and Shares: Pay a one-time entrance fee of KES 1,000 and purchase the minimum required shares.
- Documentation: Complete a membership application form, provide a personal information card, appoint a nominee, and submit copies of a National ID or passport and KRA PIN certificate.
- By-Laws: Understand the Sacco’s objectives, member obligations, and by-laws.
Benefits and Rights of Members
Membership in Unison Sacco comes with valuable rights and opportunities, including:
- Account Access: Receive a statement of account detailing credit and debit transactions upon request, subject to a small fee.
- Participation in Governance: Attend and vote in elections within your electoral zone, with the opportunity to run for a leadership position (subject to applicable laws and by-laws).
- Proposals: Submit ideas or projects to the board of directors to enhance Sacco services.
- Nominee Designation: Appoint a nominee to manage benefits in your absence.
- Profit Sharing: Participate in the distribution of the Sacco’s surpluses.
