Changing your first name in Abu Dhabi is a regulated legal process overseen by the Ministry of Justice. This guide simplifies the steps, eligibility requirements, fees, and supporting documents you need to successfully complete the process.

Step-by-Step Procedure

  1. Complete the Service Form
    • Fill out the official change of first name form accurately.
    • Ensure the form includes signatures from both the applicant and two witnesses.
  2. Attestation by the Judge
    • Submit the form to the Attestation Judge for verification and signature.
  3. Request Name Change Letters
    • Collect official letters addressed to:
      • General Directorate of Residence and Foreigners Affairs
      • Abu Dhabi Police General HQ
      • A recognized daily newspaper for publishing the name change declaration.
  4. Publish the Name Change
    • Publish your name change notice in the approved newspaper.
    • Wait 15 days after publication to allow for objections.
  5. Collect Replies and Finalize Attestation
    • Retrieve replies from the authorities mentioned above.
    • Once 15 days have passed, return to the Ministry of Justice for final attestation.
  6. Finalize the Transaction
    • Collect your application from the Archive Desk.
    • Obtain a waiting ticket and approach the Authenticator.
    • Have the judge sign and seal the declaration.

  • Original and copies of valid ID cards for the applicant and witnesses (or other accepted proof of identity).
  • Family Book (for UAE nationals).
  • Letters from the relevant authorities as listed above.
  • Newspaper publication proof of your name change declaration.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be UAE nationals with passports issued from Abu Dhabi.
  • The service applies only to first name changes.
  • A guardian may apply on behalf of minors under 11 years old (letters and newspaper publication are not required).
  • If an agent applies on your behalf, a notarized special power of attorney is required.
  • To change a family or tribal name, visit the General Directorate of Residence and Foreigners Affairs, Abu Dhabi.

Fees

The Ministry of Justice charges a fee for processing and attestation. Contact the Call Center (800 333 333) or the Abu Dhabi office for the current fee structure.


Validity

Once approved and attested, your new name remains valid indefinitely.


Processing Time

The process typically takes 2–4 weeks, including the 15-day newspaper publication period. Times may vary depending on authority responses and document verification.
