Whether it’s the aftermath of a home renovation project or a simple accidental spill, paint on tiles can be frustrating to deal with. The good news is that you can remove it without damaging the tile surface—as long as you use the right method for the type of paint and how long it has been there. Below are safe and effective ways to get paint off tiles.

1. Scrape Off Dried Paint Gently

If the paint has dried on the surface:

  • Use a plastic scraper, old credit card, or a plastic putty knife to lift the paint carefully.
  • Work slowly and gently to avoid scratching glossy or delicate tiles.
  • For stubborn spots, apply a little warm water and let it sit for a few minutes to soften the paint before scraping.

Avoid metal scrapers, as they can leave permanent scratches on ceramic, porcelain, or polished tiles.

2. Use Soapy Water for Fresh Paint

If the paint is still wet:

  • Mix warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap.
  • Dip a sponge or soft cloth into the soapy solution and wipe the paint away.
  • Rinse the cloth frequently and repeat until all the paint is gone.

This gentle method works best for fresh water-based paints.

3. Try Vinegar for Water-Based Paint (Latex Paint)

If the paint has dried but is water-based:

  • Warm a small amount of white vinegar.
  • Soak a clean cloth in the warm vinegar and place it over the paint spot.
  • Let it sit for 10–15 minutes to soften the paint.
  • Gently scrape with a plastic tool, then wipe the area with clean water.

Vinegar is non-toxic, safe, and effective for mild paint stains.

4. Use Nail Polish Remover or Acetone for Tougher Stains

For stubborn or older paint marks:

  • Apply a small amount of acetone or non-acetone nail polish remover to a cotton ball.
  • Rub the paint stain in a gentle circular motion.
  • Wipe the area clean with a damp cloth to remove any residue.

Always do a spot test on an inconspicuous area first to ensure it won’t dull or damage your tile finish.

5. Apply Rubbing Alcohol for Oil-Based Paint

Oil-based paint requires stronger cleaning:

  • Dampen a soft cloth with rubbing alcohol or mineral spirits.
  • Rub the stained area gently until the paint begins to loosen.
  • Wipe the area with soapy water, then rinse thoroughly.

Work in a well-ventilated area, especially when using chemical-based removers.

6. Clean Grout with a Baking Soda Paste

Paint often seeps into grout lines, which can be harder to clean:

  • Mix baking soda and water to form a thick paste.
  • Apply the paste to grout lines and scrub gently with an old toothbrush.
  • Rinse with warm water and repeat if needed until the paint is gone.

This method helps restore grout without harsh chemicals.

Pro Tips for Best Results

  • Start with the gentlest method first before moving to stronger solutions.
  • Always test cleaning agents on a hidden area before using them on visible surfaces.
  • Wear gloves when working with chemicals to protect your skin.
  • For large paint spills or high-value tiles (like natural stone), consider professional tile cleaning services.
