Exploring Mount Longonot National Park: A Hiker’s Paradise

Situated southeast of Lake Naivasha in Kenya’s spectacular Great Rift Valley, Mount Longonot National Park offers visitors a unique combination of volcanic landscapes, diverse wildlife, and one of the country’s most rewarding hiking experiences. Managed by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), this park features an extinct volcano with a dense crater forest and breathtaking panoramic views.

  • 2,776-meter extinct stratovolcano
  • 3.1 km wide caldera with dense forest
  • Striking views of the Rift Valley escarpment

Planning Your Visit

Best Time to Hike:

  • Early morning (6:00-10:00 am) for cooler temperatures
  • Dry seasons (January-February, June-September)

What to Bring:

  • 2-3 liters of water per person
  • Sturdy hiking shoes with good grip
  • Sun protection (hat, sunscreen)
  • Binoculars for wildlife viewing
  • Camera for scenic photography
