iOS 27: What Apple Announced at WWDC 2026

iOS 27 is shaping up as one of Apple’s most practical iPhone updates in years, combining performance improvements, deeper Apple Intelligence features, a redesigned Siri experience, and a long-awaited fix for one of iOS 26’s most controversial design changes.

Apple introduced the software update at its Worldwide Developers Conference, positioning iOS 27 as both a cleanup release and a foundation for the next phase of the iPhone. The update does not simply add new features. It also addresses complaints from users who struggled with Liquid Glass, the translucent design language Apple introduced with iOS 26.

The biggest visible change is a new opacity slider for Liquid Glass. That control allows users to adjust how transparent interface elements such as tab bars, menus, and overlays appear across the system.

It is a small feature with a big practical impact. Liquid Glass gave iOS a more modern, layered look, but it also created legibility problems in some apps and settings. Apple patched parts of the issue before the public release of iOS 26, but iOS 27 gives users direct control instead of forcing everyone to accept the same level of transparency.

That makes iOS 27 feel less like a dramatic redesign and more like a course correction.

iOS 27 Focuses on Speed and Stability

Performance is one of Apple’s main selling points for iOS 27. The company says apps launch faster, AirDrop transfers are quicker, and older iPhones should feel smoother thanks to changes in how the system schedules CPU tasks.

That matters because iOS 27 supports devices going back to the iPhone 11 and iPhone SE 2nd generation. Apple is keeping a reasonably long support window, which should please users who are not ready to upgrade to newer hardware.

The performance claims are especially important for older devices. Major iOS updates can sometimes make older iPhones feel heavier, particularly when new AI and visual features are added. Apple appears aware of that concern and is presenting iOS 27 as an update designed to improve responsiveness rather than simply add more background complexity.

If the real-world performance matches Apple’s claims, iOS 27 could be one of the more useful updates for users holding on to older iPhones.

Search Gets Rebuilt Across the iPhone

Apple has also rebuilt search in iOS 27 with a new system index designed to improve Spotlight across the operating system.

Spotlight has long been one of the iPhone’s most useful tools, but its results can feel inconsistent when users search across apps, messages, files, mail, contacts, and settings. A rebuilt index should make results faster and more relevant.

Mail is also getting a smarter ranking system for search results. Instead of simply surfacing messages that match a keyword, the app is designed to better understand what users are actually trying to find.

That could make a meaningful difference for anyone who uses Mail as a personal archive for receipts, travel details, subscriptions, work messages, and account confirmations.

Siri AI Is Apple’s Biggest Bet in iOS 27

The most ambitious part of iOS 27 is Siri AI, Apple’s redesigned voice assistant.

Apple describes the new Siri as more conversational, more capable, and more deeply connected to the iPhone. Responses can appear through the Dynamic Island, giving Siri a more visible role in the interface without always taking over the entire screen.

There is also a dedicated Siri app that saves conversation history and syncs through iCloud. That is a notable shift because Siri has traditionally been treated as a quick voice command tool rather than a persistent assistant with memory of past interactions.

Users can also adjust Siri’s voice pace and delivery, which gives the assistant a more personal feel.

The Camera app is gaining a Siri mode that can identify objects and log interactions. That points to Apple’s larger goal of making Siri more context-aware, especially as AI assistants move beyond simple voice commands into visual understanding and on-device actions.

But there are limits. Siri AI will launch as a beta later this year, initially in English only, and it will not be available in the European Union at launch. That EU limitation is significant because Apple has a large user base across Europe, and delayed availability could weaken the impact of one of iOS 27’s headline features.

Apple Intelligence Expands Across Core Apps

iOS 27 also pushes Apple Intelligence deeper into everyday iPhone apps.

Safari can automatically group related tabs, helping users manage research, shopping, travel planning, and work browsing sessions. The browser also adds a “Notify Me” feature that allows users to set page-specific notifications.

The Phone app gains Call Context, a feature designed to surface useful information during a call. For example, if a user is speaking with an airline or hotel, the iPhone could show relevant confirmation details without forcing the user to search manually.

Passwords is also getting smarter. Apple says users will be able to update credentials more easily, including automatic password changes with a tap in supported cases.

Photos receives an expanded Clean Up tool and new generative AI features for reframing images. That keeps Apple in the same broad race as Google and other companies building AI-powered editing tools directly into their photo apps.

The direction is clear: Apple wants Apple Intelligence to feel less like a separate product and more like a layer built into the apps people already use.

Apple Is Still Catching Up in AI

iOS 27 is also a reminder that Apple is still trying to recover from delays around its original Apple Intelligence promises.

The company first announced a major Siri upgrade at WWDC 2024, but some of the most important features were delayed after Apple admitted they were taking longer than expected. The delay created frustration because Apple had already marketed some of those capabilities as part of the future iPhone experience.

Since then, Apple has faced legal pressure, growing skepticism from users, and a widening gap between its AI rollout and the pace set by Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic.

Siri AI is Apple’s attempt to reset the story. The company is not just trying to make Siri answer questions more naturally. It is trying to turn Siri into a more useful assistant that understands context, works across apps, and fits into daily iPhone use.

The challenge is execution. Apple has a strong privacy story and tight hardware-software integration, but users will judge Siri AI by whether it actually works better than the older Siri in real situations.

iOS 27 Hints at a Foldable iPhone

Beyond the official features, iOS 27 also appears to lay groundwork for future hardware.

Developers examining the iOS 27 beta have reportedly found references to terms such as foldState, mechanicalAngleDegrees, and angleDegrees. Those references suggest Apple is preparing software support for a foldable device.

That does not confirm a launch by itself, but it fits with growing expectations that Apple is working on a foldable iPhone.

iOS 27 also introduces full-page widgets on the iPhone, a format that would make more sense on a larger display. A foldable iPhone could use that extra screen space for widgets, multitasking, app previews, and more flexible layouts.

Apple has also updated iPhone Mirroring on Mac to support iPad-sized display layouts. That change could be another sign that Apple is preparing iOS for more screen sizes and form factors.

A foldable iPhone would be one of Apple’s biggest hardware changes in years. Samsung, Google, Huawei, Honor, and other companies have already spent years refining foldable phones, but Apple has waited. If it enters the category, it will likely do so only when it believes the software experience, display durability, battery life, and app ecosystem are ready.

iOS 27 looks like part of that preparation.

Smaller iOS 27 Features Round Out the Update

The rest of iOS 27 adds useful improvements across Apple’s ecosystem.

iCloud Shared Albums now works better with Android and Windows users, making photo sharing more practical for families and groups that do not use only Apple devices.

Apple Maps gains an upgraded Flyover mode, improving the visual experience for exploring cities and landmarks.

AirPods get custom EQ settings, giving users more control over how their earbuds sound. Health adds more advanced cycle tracking, continuing Apple’s push to make the iPhone and Apple Watch more useful for personal health monitoring.

None of these features will define iOS 27 on their own, but together they make the update feel broader and more polished.

iOS 27 Is a Fix, an AI Reset and a Hardware Clue

iOS 27 does not look like a flashy update built around one dramatic redesign. Instead, it looks like Apple is fixing problems, improving speed, and preparing the iPhone for a more AI-heavy and possibly foldable future.

The Liquid Glass opacity slider shows Apple responding to criticism rather than defending a design choice at all costs. The performance improvements show the company still wants older iPhones to feel usable. The rebuilt search system and smarter Mail ranking suggest Apple is trying to make everyday tasks faster.

Siri AI is the biggest test. If it works well, iOS 27 could become the update that finally makes Siri feel modern. If it launches slowly, remains limited by region, or fails to match user expectations, Apple’s AI gap will remain a major talking point.

The foldable clues may be just as important. iOS 27 seems to be preparing the software side of the iPhone for a new shape of hardware.

That makes the update more than a routine annual release. iOS 27 is Apple’s attempt to repair the past year’s software complaints while quietly setting up the next major chapter of the iPhone.
