As Kenya faces rising living costs and soaring education fees, financing further studies locally or abroadhas become increasingly difficult. While the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) offers support to students in Kenya, the funding often falls short of covering full tuition. As a result, many students and their guardians look to other options to fund their education.

What Is the KCB Masomo Loan?

KCB Masomo is a dedicated education loan offered by KCB Bank Kenya, designed to support students with strong academic potential. It provides unsecured funding to both students and guardians (who must be salaried and meet certain criteria) to help bridge the financial gap left by HELB or other sources.

Key Features

  • Borrowing range: Between KSh 100,000 to KSh 4 million, depending on financial capacity.
  • Repayment term: Flexible repayment period of up to 24 months (2 years).
  • Interest & fees:
    • Fixed annual interest rate of around 13%, inclusive of CRB-related charges and bank margin.
    • Processing fee of 2.5%, plus 20% excise duty on the fee. Insurance may be included.
  • Repayment method: Check-off, with auto-debit from salary or guardian’s account. Early repayment is permitted.
  • Account requirement: Must hold an active KCB account for a minimum of 3 months.

Eligibility Criteria

You must meet the following to qualify:

  • Be either a salaried individual (student or guardian) or self-employed with verifiable income.
  • Hold an active KCB account for at least three months.
  • Provide these documents:
    • Valid Kenyan ID or passport
    • Admission letter from an accredited institution
    • Payslips (for salaried applicants) or income proof (for self-employed)
    • KRA PIN certificate
    • Completed application form

Loan Application Process

  1. Visit your nearest KCB branch with the required documents and submit the application.
  2. Alternatively, complete the application form via the KCB website.
  3. A KCB representative will contact you for further verification and guide you through the next steps.

Who Should Consider Masomo Loan?

  • University and college students needing supplementary funding to support studies in Kenya.
  • Parents or guardians willing to back their children’s education.
  • Students seeking short-term financing with manageable repayment terms.

Benefits of Choosing Masomo Loan

  • Competitive interest rates and transparent fees.
  • High loan limits up to KSh 4 million, ideal for comprehensive fee coverage.
  • Quick loan processing when eligibility is met.
  • Unsecured and conveniently repayable through check-off mechanisms.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • This is strictly an educational loan—misuse may lead to complications.
  • Loan approval depends on verification of income and the ability to repay within the term.
  • Ensure timely repayments to maintain eligibility for future top-ups, which are available once 25% of the principal is repaid
