Top Sukuma Wiki Varieties Grown in Kenya

Several kale varieties are suitable for Kenyan agro-climatic conditions. Each variety offers different advantages in terms of yield, leaf size, and disease resistance:

  • Mfalme F1 – High-yielding hybrid with uniform growth and excellent leaf quality.
  • Thousand Headed – Popular traditional variety with large leaves and high biomass.
  • Collards Southern Georgia – Heat-tolerant and slow to bolt; ideal for warm regions.
  • Sukuma Siku Hybrid – Known for fast growth and resistance to common pests.
  • Marrow Stem – Features thick stems and is favored for its hardiness.

Ecological Conditions for Growing Sukuma Wiki

To achieve good yields, sukuma wiki should be grown under the following conditions:

  • Rainfall: Ideally between 350 mm and 500 mm, well distributed.
  • Altitude: Best grown at elevations ranging from 800 to 2,200 meters above sea level.
  • Temperature: Prefers a moderate range of 17°C to 22°C.
  • Soil: Fertile, well-drained soils with a pH of 5.5 to 7.0.
  • Sunlight: Requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Proper land preparation is key to healthy crop development. Begin land preparation several weeks before planting:

  • Perform deep ploughing to encourage strong root development.
  • Level the land and incorporate organic matter or manure to improve soil fertility.

Planting Guide for Sukuma Wiki

There are two common methods of establishing sukuma wiki:

1. Nursery and Transplanting

  • Sow seeds in a raised nursery bed (about 1 meter wide).
  • Mix the nursery soil with well-decomposed manure and Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) to enrich nutrient content.
  • Create shallow drills (about 2 cm deep) spaced 15 cm apart.
  • Cover seeds lightly with soil after sowing.
  • Germination typically takes 10–14 days.
  • Top-dress seedlings with Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN) once they sprout; one teaspoon per planting hole is sufficient.

2. Direct Transplanting

  • Transplant after 4–6 weeks, when seedlings have developed at least four strong roots.
  • Transplant early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce transplant shock.

Spacing Recommendations

  • For small leaves: 30 cm × 30 cm
  • For medium leaves: 60 cm × 45 cm
  • For large-leaf varieties: 60 cm × 60 cm

  • Mulching is encouraged to reduce soil moisture loss, suppress weeds, and prevent erosion.
  • Water regularly—especially during dry spells—to maintain consistent soil moisture.
  • Avoid overwatering, as waterlogging can lead to root rot.

  • First harvest can begin 8 weeks after transplanting.
  • Harvesting is done by hand-picking the lower leaves to encourage continued growth.
  • With good management, sukuma wiki can be harvested weekly for up to 5 months.
